I’ve been hearing many variations on the same theme lately:
Things are getting scary out there.
What is this world coming to?
I just want to run away and hide for the rest of my life.
And, on the surface, it all seems to be true. In the span of my ten-minute tea time this morning, I read no fewer than a dozen headlines that made me sick to my stomach.
That was the one word that came to my mind again and again.
But the truth is, depravity was born when original sin was born. They’re twins. They seem to share a sort of twisted symbiotic relationship that I will never, ever understand on this side of heaven. Depravity and sin cannot exist without each other. They are two parts of the same whole.
All this to say — the world is not coming to anything. The world is already there. It’s been there for millennia. But as technology continues to shrink the world at astronomical speed, we simply become more and more aware of just how sin-ridden and worm-holed humanity is. Not has become — is. But the One who was, is, and will be, quietly reminds me that I have nothing to fear.
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
